The Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA), in partnership with HCA, is pleased to announce the recipients of the HCA Corris Boyd Scholarships for 2012. This year’s winners are Carolina Garcia and Mohamed Jalloh.

The HCA Corris Boyd Scholars Program annually provides two deserving minority students with $20,000 per year towards a master’s degree in healthcare management from the AUPHA-member school of their choice. The program was established in 2006 in honor of Corris Boyd, a senior healthcare executive with HealthTrust Purchasing Group and HCA.  Mr. Boyd was dedicated to increasing diversity and a proponent of excellence in leadership. He died in 2005.

Carolina Garcia is an incoming graduate student at Northwestern University, where she will begin work towards a Master of Business Administration (MBA) within their comprehensive Health Enterprise Management Major. Garcia resides in Tuscon, Arizona and earned her Bachelors of Arts in Psychology from the University of Arizona.I am advancing to a higher destination of education and career and this is through hard work, dedication, and determination, but equally important is the support and encouragement I have received along the way.  I have not done this on my own—my family, friends, and community form a part of where I am going,” says Carolina. “The Corris Boyd Scholars Program forms part of that community.  The recognition and financial assistance provided places me one step closer to fulfilling my dream of becoming a healthcare executive who is passionate about health and others. I am deeply appreciative and feel truly honored.”

Mohamed Jalloh will enter the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill this fall to pursue a Master of Health Administration (MHA).  Jalloh is a graduate of the University of Maryland School of Public Health, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Community Health.  He currently lives in Gaithersburg, MD.  “I believe that while this scholarship has been given to me, it is not for me,” said Mohamed upon hearing of his selection.  “To me, it is an investment in what I can do for everyone else.  So, on behalf of all my peers, and to those I’ll help in the future, I say thank you so very much.”

“AUPHA is proud to partner with HCA in recognizing outstanding students and supporting them as they pursue a career in healthcare management,” says Lydia Middleton, President & CEO of AUPHA. “Carolina and Mohamed embody the excellence and drive that was exemplified by Corris Boyd.  I am confident they will do great things and we are delighted to play a small part in helping them achieve their dreams.”
