S. Robert Hernandez is Professor in the Department of Health Services Administration at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Director of the Doctoral Programs in Administration-Health Services, and served as Department Chair from 1994 to 2000. He was elected to the Board of the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA) in 2007. He has served as Chair of the Health Care Administration Division of the Academy of Management and is Past-Chair of the Board of Directors of the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education. He has received the Joseph F. Volker Outstanding Faculty Award for the School of Health Professions at UAB and selected as the 1993 Outstanding Alumnus by the Alumni Association of the Graduate Programs in Health Administration at UAB. The Healthcare Management Division of the Academy of Management awarded the first Excellence in Teaching Award to Dr. Hernandez. He was awarded the Filerman Prize for Innovation in Health Services Management Education by AUPHA in 2006. The American Sociological Association and the Academy of Management have honored his applied research. Dr. Hernandez has published in numerous academic and professional journals and has made many presentations to academic and practitioner groups. He is currently co-editor of the Journal of Health Administration Education and has served on the editorial boards of Health Care Management Review, Journal of Healthcare Management, Medical Care Review, Health Services Management Research, and Alabama Journal of Medical Sciences. He has worked on global health issues in Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Ukraine. He is a graduate of the Masters of Science in Hospital Administration Program at UAB, and received his doctorate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
