The Association of University Programs in Health Administration is holding the 2012 Annual Meeting May 31 – June 3, 2012 in Minneapolis, MN.  The Annual Meeting brings together graduate and undergraduate faculty to share ideas and proven practices in educating future practitioners in healthcare management.  The meeting features thought leaders who provoke new ideas and direction for healthcare management education.  The largest of our educational meetings, the Annual Meeting provides exceptional opportunities for networking with faculty at domestic and international healthcare management programs.

This year's Annual Meeting is about Embracing Transformation.  Every facet of healthcare, and likewise healthcare management and policy education, is transforming.  From healthcare reform to the impact of HIT implementation; from new healthcare and education delivery models to the shrinking global landscape; from evolving business models in higher education to the increasing diversity of our students; there is literally nothing that remains unchanged about the work we do as educators in healthcare management.  To stay ahead of the curve, health management educators must embrace the changing landscape to ensure our students are prepared to adapt to and thrive in this dynamic environment.

Preparing students to enter healthcare administration is a daunting task.  While foundational or core knowledge is important, program curricula must be current and relevant.  Additionally, it’s important for graduates to understand the importance of applying what they’ve learned in a dynamic integrative fashion.  With these concurrent issues, many programs have sought to redesign their curricula.

Walsh redesigned its MBA-Healthcare Management as if no program existed - starting from the ground-up.  Instead of tweaking courses or replicating other programs, a new model was developed - starting with student learning outcomes.  From these outcomes, a systematic process unfolded, resulting in a new curriculum.  The process engaged key stakeholders while also keeping an eye on accreditation.  In the end, this new model can be applied to start-up or existing programs.

Major change, organizational reform, and a focus on efficiency and health outcomes are facts of life for today’s healthcare leaders and healthcare organizations. Although managing organizational change is a critical managerial competency, for some, the leadership skills required for minimizing resistance to change may only be learned through experience. This makes simulations an ideal medium for teaching change management and providing “hands-on” experience for the participants.

This session will describe the authors’ experience in using a simulation exercise called Central-Valleyview with graduate and undergraduate health services administration students. By using a simulation that is grounded both in the theory of change management and the application of these principles in the healthcare field, students can enhance their leadership skills in the management of change by doing the following:
• identifying the forces for and against change
• understanding and balancing stakeholder interests
• applying change

This webinar will show the participant how to implement this Change Management course into your own curriculum.
