Now that Leaders Conference is completed and the March Board meeting is history, I thought that members might be interested in some of the preliminary results from the Member Survey. First of all, thank you for responding. The feedback from members is essential for our efforts to understand and respond to member interests, ideas and concerns. We understand how busy you are so taking the time to provide feedback comes at a cost that you absorb as an individual.

Second, you will be pleased that the preliminary results from members are pretty positive. The core evaluative question was “Would you recommend membership in AUPHA to your fellow faculty members and/or program director colleagues?”  Nearly 60% indicated a 9 or 10 on a ten point “likely to recommend scale.”  This puts most respondents as “promoters.”  Only 11.6% indicated a score less than 7 and therefore are termed “potential detractors” and 28.7% of respondents indicated a 7 or 8 and are classified as “passives.”  While pretty good, we need to strive to turn the passives to promoters and the potential detractors to at least a passive category.  We must better understand why all members would not highly recommend membership in AUPHA.

With regard to the evaluation of the value of select services that AUPHA provides, you told us that most all items were “extremely valuable” versus “not valuable.” Services with a high percentage of “extremely valuable” responses include Annual Meeting, support for CAHME Accreditation, Faculty Salary Survey, and The Journal of Health Administration Education.  For some items, a substantial number of you indicated that the service was either not relevant or that you were unaware of the service. Because some of our services are targeted to subgroups of members, that outcome is not surprising. The Undergraduate Workshop, for example, had 41% of you indicating it was not relevant or that you were unaware of it.

Finally, evaluations of staff and the Board were mixed.  Staff received generally very positive marks for “Courtesy and Friendliness,” “Professionalism,” “Responsiveness” and “Ability to Solve Problems.” The Board, on the other hand, suffers from not being as well known.  More than 30% of you indicated that you could not assess the Board on the dimensions considered (strategic direction, transparency, accessibility, effectiveness, focus on vision and mission and extent to which it represents AUPHA membership). Further, between 17% and 30% of you indicated that the Board did a poor, fair or good job on these five dimensions.

The open comments were also informative. When asked “What could AUPHA do to help you, your program and students achieve excellence?” the top responses by category (with a representative example) were:

  • Teaching resources/support (Education in higher learning methods)
  • Career and student recruitment support (health administration employment opportunities for graduating students)
  • Scholarship support (Guidance in Health Administration research techniques)
  • Benchmarking (faculty surveys used to be helpful until methodology changed)
  • Internship opportunities (support for internships)
  • Brand enhancement (Raise awareness in the field about health administration)

The Board had a robust response to these preliminary findings with special consideration on methods of improving communication with members. Further, we have begun to address items indicated. Look for us to address Career Support, the revamped salary survey and Benchmarking system and continual enhancements for the Annual Meeting.

Thanks for the input. We listen! If you have not had the opportunity to respond, the survey is still open but respond quickly because it must close soon.
