Dolores G. Clement, DrPH, FACHE, Named Recipient of the 2018 Filerman Prize for Educational Leadership

Washington, DC, May 4, 2018 – The Gary L. Filerman Prize for Educational Leadership Selection Committee is pleased to announce the selection of Dolores G. Clement, DrPH, FACHE, Professor of Health Administration and Sentara Professor and Director of the Dual Degree Program at Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Clement will be presented with the Prize at the AUPHA Annual Meeting this June in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Dr. Clement was nominated by Carolyn (Cindy) Watts, PhD, Richard M. Bracken Chair and Chairman from Virginia Commonwealth University.

After pursuing an undergraduate degree from the College of Mount St. Joseph, Dr. Clement worked as a social worker in Cincinnati before traveling to Sierra Leone, West Africa where she worked as a teacher in the Peace Corp and as an administrative assistant in a local clinic. Upon her return to the United States, she collected her Masters of International Affairs from Ohio University, followed by a Masters in Health Systems Management from Rush University. She finally received her Doctorate in Public Health from the University of California, Berkeley. After finishing her education, Dr. Clement began her teaching career at Virginia Commonwealth University where she has served as (among many other appointments) Professor, Associate Dean of the School of Allied Health Professionals, Vice Chair and Director of Graduate Programs, and Director of Dual Degree Programs. She also remained committed to work outside of the classroom, acting as planners for health services projects in Chicago and Yemen.

Dr. Clement is a member of many professional and community organizations and has served on the for Board of Directors for AUPHA, the Central Virginia Healthcare Executive Group, the Association for the Social Sciences in Health, Virginia Health Information, and the Richmond Bioethics Consortium.

Nominations for the 2019 Filerman Prize will be solicited in the fall and winter for submissions by early 2019. The Prize recognizes individuals from AUPHA member programs who have made outstanding contributions to the field of health administration education, who have exhibited leadership in the field, and who have enriched their institutions, their students, and health administration education through their work.
