M. Paige Powell, PhD, MHA has agreed to serve as the new Master of Health Administration (MHA) Program Director within the Division of Health Systems Management and Policy of The University of Memphis (UofM) School of Public Health.

The leadership and practice experience that Dr. Powell brings to this position is outstanding. At UofM, she leads several national case competitions of MHA students and coordinates the School of Public Health Interdisciplinary Case Competition, which includes graduate students from across the university. This past academic year, UofM MHA teams were finalists at the Ohio State case competition and semi-finalists at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) case competition. Prior to joining UofM in 2013, she served as program director of the undergraduate honors program in the UAB School of Health Professions. At UAB, she taught students in their Master of Science in Health Administration, Executive Master of Science in Health Administration, and undergraduate healthcare management programs. Since October 2017, Dr. Powell has brought this broad experience to bear as the lead for our current Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME) MHA reaccreditation process.

Dr. Powell received her PhD in Health Policy and Administration from Pennsylvania State University and began her teaching career in the University of South Carolina MHA program. At UofM, she currently teaches Health Economics, Health Policy, and Healthcare Quality. Her research focuses on the reduction of health disparities through patient-centered outcomes research. She built a coalition of patient and family caregivers, researchers, and practitioners, and trained them in how to improve the care of cancer patients across Memphis.

As MHA Program Director, Dr. Powell's goals include increasing professional development opportunities for our students, further strengthening all aspects of our MHA-community collaborations, and supporting the development of hybrid, online, and other training programs.

Dr. Powell looks forward to taking the helm of the MHA program during the 25th Anniversary of the first MHA graduating class. She has been a True Blue Tiger since her undergraduate days, was one of the first full-time students to graduate from the UofM MHA Program in 1998, and has served as our faculty liaison to the alumni who are planning the 25th Anniversary MHA Gala which is scheduled for October 20th at Graceland in Memphis, TN.
