The Health Care Management (HCM) program at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) will be leading a research project using PARO, an artificial intelligence robotic seal. As an FDA approved medical device, PARO was specifically invented by Dr. Takanori Shibata to reduce the symptoms associated with dementia. PARO earned Shibata the 2018 Ryman award for enhancing the lives of older people with his invention. Fall 2019, the HCM program at SIUC will begin using the artificial intelligence seal for collaborative research with the Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders also on the SIUC campus. Southern Illinois University Carbondale's Health Care Management (HCM) program received a new healthcare informatics education learning lab made possible with the assistance of Southern Illinois Healthcare (SIH). HCM and SIH collaborated to bring the most up-to- date access in electronic health/medical records to students and faculty through their EPIC training modules. All HCM faculty underwent varying levels of EPIC training at the SIH facility and can now integrate this knowledge directly to the classroom by providing students hands-on access and training in EPIC. The new computer lab/classroom also provides faculty the opportunity to do simulated case scenarios specific to healthcare for the purpose of perfecting students' skills in predictive analysis.
