Percy Allen II '75 Lecture and Sloan Visit Day

The Sloan Program in Health Administration's inaugural Visit Day kicked off with the second biennial Percy Allen II '75 Lecture in Urban Healthcare Leadership featuring Patricia A. Maryland, Dr.PH, President, Healthcare Operations and COO, Ascension Health. Sloan's Visit Day offers admitted and prospective students an opportunity to meet with students and alumni, connect with program faculty, and hear from distinguished leaders in the field of healthcare management, all while discovering why studying at Cornell and living in Ithaca create such a rich and rewarding experience.

The Percy Allen II '75 Lecture honors Modern Healthcare Hall of Fame inductee and long time National Association of Health Services Executives (NAHSE) leader Mr. Percy Allen. The Lecture brings to campus an accomplished and high-profile leader working to address the healthcare needs of the underserved in urban communities. The Percy Allen II '75 Lecture celebrates the accomplishments of African American health care leaders.

Dr. Maryland presented an informative lecture and discussion titled "Ascension: Investing in Community Health and Building Hope." Since her presentation at Cornell, Dr. Maryland has been promoted to CEO, effective July 1, 2017.

With a focus on diversity, Visit Day seeks to matriculate outstanding students who will thrive during their two-year course of study. It is an exciting new part of the Sloan Program's admissions process and we proudly hosted 22 admitted and prospective students.

Intersession

January is Intersession month for the Sloan Program. This year all Sloan students spent two days in New York City at New York Presbyterian (NYP), the university hospital of Columbia and Cornell, and the nation's largest teaching hospital as ranked by Modern Healthcare. Intersession trips to New York City and Washington, DC have been an integral part of the Sloan Program's experiential learning curriculum for decades.

Sponsored by the Sloan Program and hosted by NYP Vice President Jeffrey Bokser '01, sixty-one students, faculty and staff learned from NYP senior executives about the challenges and rewards of running a major academic medical center. Thursday's learning sessions were capped off with a very well attended alumni reception at the Skylight Lounge in the Belfer Research Building. Many thanks go to Sloan alumni Jeff Bokser '01, Jenny Santiago '16, Emil Smith '12, Michael Parks '09 and Christy Listenbee '09 for hosting us and organizing an engaging curriculum.

Nancy Schlichting '79 Opens Inaugural Women's Leadership Symposium

This spring the Sloan Program hosted its inaugural Women in Healthcare Leadership Symposium. The two-day event brought together fellow students and alumni in an engaging forum rich with the unique insights of accomplished professionals from across the healthcare sector. The symposium opened with a keynote presentation by Nancy Schlichting '79, recently retired President of Henry Ford Health System. Saturday's events included networking opportunities and engaging working sessions on topics such as building your personal board of directors, managing ambiguity in an era of health care reform and leading intergenerational teams.

The student organized symposium would not have been possible without the generous support of our many sponsors, including the Igor C. Zakoworotny '77 and Richard Namerow '82 Sloan Student Resource Fund, Sloan Alumni Association, Sloan Program in Health Administration, College of Human Ecology Alumni Affairs and Development, Sloan Student Association, Cornell Institute for Healthy Futures and Cornell Women's Resource Center.
