On Feb. 20, 2018, the Master of Healthcare Administration program brought together alumni, current students and faculty members to celebrate the MHA Program’s 10th anniversary of preparing the next generation of healthcare administration leaders.

Several awards were presented to alumni, staff and faculty.
  • MHA Alumni Distinguished Service Awards
    • Greg Larsen, MHA/MBA 2014
  • Project Manager, University of Utah Health, Community Clinics for his assistance with recruiting, interviewing prospects and participating in alumni panels
    • Coni Westmorland, MHA/MPH 2014, Value Based Operations Director, Salem Health for her participation in fellowship panels, both virtually and in person
    • Evan Day, MHA/MBA 2014, Quality Consultant, University of Utah Heath and Jared Schultz, MHA/MPH 2014, Practice Administrator at Medman (Medical Management, Inc.), for leading the development of the MHA Alumni Association
  • MHA Distinguished Alum
    • Matt Ahearn, MHA/MBA 2008, Assistant Director, Bureau of Managed Care, Utah Department of Health for his career progression since graduation
  • MHA Distinguished Service Award
    • Kathryn Adair, MHA Career Development and Employer Relations Manager for her success in helping to place our graduates
  • MHA Outstanding Faculty
    • Joe Horton, Professor/lecturer, two time recipient of the Daniels Ethics Fund Excellence in Ethics Education Award, for his contribution to the development of our students as ethical leaders
  • MHA Distinguished Professor
    • Scott Parker, Professor/lecturer, for the wisdom he brings to his students gained over an exceptional career as a healthcare administrator

Student News

The University of Utah team placed in the finals at the 13th Annual University of Alabama Healthcare Case Competition. This year’s UAB competition included 41 teams. We want to congratulate the winning team from the University of Minnesota and runners up Rush University and Johns Hopkins University as well as the teams from Pennsylvania State University and University of Washington who also were in the finals.

The 2018 Utah team included Mikayla Lyman, second-year MHA/MBA student, Aaron Fanello and Jeff Spear, both second-year MHA students and two first-year MHA students, Amra Alibegic and Reece Pickering, as observers.

Several students received scholarships from Utah Healthcare Executives to attend ACHE Congress: - Amanda Snyder and Mark Shahata, 2nd year MHA students and Garrett Nelson, 1st year MHA student.

Faculty News
Debra Scammon and colleague Christie North presented at the Aging in America conference in San Francisco March 28th. This week long conference was sponsored by the American Society on Aging and AARP. Scammon’s session, titled Creating Caregiver Provider Partnerships, highlighted work the pair is doing with an award from the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute aimed to identify creative ways in which family caregivers can be more formally engaged in the clinical visits of older adults with multiple chronic conditions.
