Three new faculty members joined the Department of Health Services Management and Leadership this Fall including:
Dr. Alfred Hamilton, retired Army Medical Service Corps Lieutenant Colonel, is a Visiting Assistant Professor. His primary research focus and expertise is in health information technology and health informatics. He teaches courses in the Master¹s of Health Service Administration and the Health Information Technology Graduate Certificate program. Dr. Hamilton was recently requested by senior members of the White House to host a symposium that focused on the role and future of health information technology, in an era of health care transformation. Participants of the symposium consisted of senior leaders from the White House, Health and Human Services, Department of Defense, Veterans Administration, and public and private health care organizations. Dr. Hamilton holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science from Augusta State University, Masters of Science Administration in Software Engineering from Central Michigan University, and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Information Decision Systems/Decision Science from The George Washington University. His most recent accomplishments include being awarded the Department of Defense Chief Information Officer Award, selected as a member of the most prestigious Military Medical Society; the Order of the Medical Military Merit, and to attend the Nobel Peace Prize Week.
Dr. Leah Masselink joined the HSML faculty as a Professorial Lecturer in September 2011. Before coming to GW, she earned a PhD in Health Policy & Management from the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at UNC School of Nursing. She is co-teaching HSML 6206 (Epidemiology and Biostatistics in Health Services) and HSML 6211 (Health Economics) during the Fall 2011 semester. She also serves as a consultant on the Health Workforce Development team for the USAID Health Care Improvement Project at University Research Co. in Bethesda, MD, supporting health workforce research projects in Tanzania, Ethiopia and Mali.
Dr. Sheila McGinnis, Visiting Associate Professor, joined the Health Services Management and Leadership Program at George Washington University in August, 2011. She holds a PhD in Management from Pennsylvania State University, with MS and BS degrees from Iowa State University. Dr. McGinnis directed the Health Care Administration Program at Montana State University Billings, served as Assistant Professor of Health Care Administration at Idaho State University, Visiting Assistant Professor of Health Management and Policy at University of Iowa, and Assistant Professor of Management at Metropolitan State College of Denver. Her research focuses on organization design and the structures, processes and cultures that contribute to effective organization management, especially the role of social networks. She is also interested in curriculum development and new approaches to learning.
