CAHME Reaccreditation. We are proud to announce that the MHA program at University of Iowa has received 7-year re-accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME).

HMP Department Welcomes New Faculty. We are excited to welcome two new faculty, Dan Shane, PhD and Brad Wright, PhD.

Shane completed his PhD in the Economics Department at Indiana University, Bloomington in 2012. His research broadly focuses on applying econometric methods to tackle policy-oriented issues related to the economics of health insurance and the impact of health care reform.

Wright comes to the UI College of Public Health from Brown University, where he was an Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)-funded postdoctoral fellow at the Center for Gerontology and Health Care Research. Wright received his doctorate in health policy and management from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His research focuses on safety-net and primary care providers, access to care for vulnerable populations, and health politics and policy, with a focus on health reform and public participation in health care.

2013 ACHE Congress. The Department and its student organization, the Iowa Student Association of Healthcare Leaders (ISAHL) is looking forward to sending a record 60 students to ACHE Congress this year. Earlier this fall, ISAHL held a golf tournament fundraising event that enables them to cover the cost of students’ hotel rooms while at the Congress. ISAHL also organizes professional, social, and philanthropic opportunities for students to participate in.

2012 Healthcare Symposium. The Department of Health Management and Policy held the 34th Annual Iowa Healthcare Executive Symposium, “Driving Value in Healthcare,” in October. The symposium had high attendance, including current students and community healthcare executives. Additionally, many alumni came back to participate as both guests and speakers. Featured speakers included Bill Woodson, Senior Vice President, Sg2 who spoke about healthcare’s path from volume to value and the A. James Tinker Lecturer, Jim Skogsbergh, ‘82, President and CEO, Advocate Health Care, who presented on Advocate’s perspective on healthcare system transformation. Thomas C. Dolan, PhD ’77, FACHE, CAE, President and CEO, American College of Healthcare Executives, capped off the event with the Donald W. Dunn Memorial Lecture “Leading in an Era of Change.”

MHA Student Trip to Milwaukee. In November the first-year students visited several healthcare-related organizations in Wisconsin. The first stop was in Verona, WI, where they toured the headquarters of healthcare software company EPIC and participated in a Q&A session with employees. The trip continued the next day at Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin and the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin where students toured and met with program alumni to discuss career paths, fellowship experiences, and challenges facing the healthcare system.

New Research Projects. HMP has several exciting new research projects. Department Head Dr. Keith Mueller will lead two new projects delving into rural policy research, including the “Rural Health System Analysis and Technical Assistance Cooperative Agreement” funded by HRSA and “Supporting the Policy Advisory Activities of the Health Panel, Rural Policy Research” funded by the Leona M and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust.

Dr. Marcia Ward is heading up two new projects focused on “Program Evaluation of AHA’s STEMI Program in South Dakota and North Dakota”, funded through the American Heart Association and The Leona M and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust.

Dr. Fredric Wolinsky will be working with the UI College of Nursing faculty Marianne Smith (PI) as a co-investigator on the project “Improving Mood in Assisted Living Using a Cognitive Training Intervention”, funded by NIH.  He will also be leading a research team funded by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute on the project “Methodologies to Adjust for Respondent Status Effects on Health Outcomes”.

Dr. George Wehby was awarded funding by NIH to lead research on “Academic Achievement of Children and Adolescents with Oral Clefts”.

Finally, Dr. Brad Wright was awarded a grant by the Retirement Research Foundation to study “Do Federally Qualified Health Centers Reduce Hospital-Based Care of Ambulatory Care Sensitive Conditions among Medicaid-Medicare Dual Eligibles?”
