The Department of Health Management and Policy (HMP) was delighted to welcome two new faculty members this fall: Simone Singh and Holly Jarman.
After earning her PhD in Health Services Organization and Policy at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor), Singh was assistant professor of health systems administration at Georgetown University School of Nursing and Health Studies. She is an assistant professor of health management and policy.
Holly Jarman, who earned her PhD from the London School of Economics & Political Science, joins our Department as research assistant professor. In December, she was one of four researchers to receive the newly established Mentored Research Scientist Development Award (a two-year award from the National Coordinating Center for Public Health Services and Systems Research to focus on Health Information Exchange). Jarman will study implementation of policies supporting Health Information Exchange (HIE) as they relate to the exchange of lab data and immunization records via statewide collaborative networks. She will work with a mentor, Peter Jacobson, HMP professor of health law and director of the Center for Law, Ethics and Health in the U-M School of Public Health.
Professor Charles Friedman has been honored with the 2012 Detmer Award for Health Policy Contributions in Informatics by the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA). Friedman was recognized for his contributions to health policy in biomedical and health informatics. He is the founding director of the joint graduate program in health informatics administered by the School of Information and the School of Public Health.
Professor Gail Warden, M.H.A. was presented the Institute of Medicine (IOM) 2012 Adam Yarmolinsky Medal recognizing an IOM member from a discipline outside the health and medical sciences who has, over a significant period of time, contributed in multiple ways to the mission of the Institute of Medicine. Warden has greatly contributed to improving health care through his role as a nationally recognized health systems administrator at the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, where he demonstrated how focusing on quality could lead to system-wide improvements in care. He played a significant role in establishing several influential organizations, including the National Committee for Quality Assurance and the National Quality Forum.
On February 8, HMP’s Griffith Leadership Center is hosting the first Health Management and Policy Case Competition sponsored by Blue Cottage Consulting. School of Public Health student groups will tackle a case that includes public health, health policy, and health management issues and implications.
