Innovative Session Immerses Students in Clinical Setting

Students from the MHSA program in the Department of Health Systems Administration at Georgetown University at the Washington DC VA Medical Center
An innovative opportunity allowed 20 first-year students from Georgetown’s MHSA program to spend 15 hours at the Washington DC VA Medical Center learning about the language of health care and medicine. Ryung Suh, MD, MPP, MBA, MPH, associate professor of Health Systems Administration, led the master’s students through the dynamic overnight session on November 29-30, 2012. The purpose of the experience was to provide a broad familiarization with the structure of medical terminology and the common clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic terms that students may encounter as administrators working with health care providers. The session also aimed to simulate the long hours and the demanding experience of being “on-call” overnight within a hospital in order to broaden the students’ perspectives, while also providing context for the medical terminology the students were learning by visiting parts of the hospital where those terms are most commonly used. ACO Summit Allows Students to Engage Health Leaders
A recent summit focusing on accountable care organizations (ACO) offered several Georgetown University students an opportunity to engage with physician leaders, policy analysts, and group practice executives. The event, co-sponsored by the Department of Health Systems Administration and the Group Practice Forum of the Kinetix Group, took place December 3-4, 2012, in Washington, D.C. The summit served as a forum for health care executives to discuss challenges and opportunities that accompany the movement toward using ACOs as the model for organization, delivery, and reimbursement for care.
As follow-up to the summit, the HSA department's AcademyHealth student chapter has been commissioned to write a white paper based on the proceedings that will serve as a resource to address key challenges, identify best practices, and provide a roadmap for group practice organizations and pioneer ACOs as the new reimbursement model is implemented. Stoto and Kraemer to Organize Workshop at 2013 Public Health Preparedness Summit
Georgetown HSA professors Michael Stoto and John Kraemer are organizing a workshop on Critical Incident Analysis and Reporting to Enhance Public Health Emergency Preparedness at the 2013 Public Health Preparedness Summit in Atlanta in March. Building on their research on critical incident registries in health care and other industries, the workshop will explore how registries can facilitate deeper analysis of particular incidents and provide a means to share lessons. Through didactic presentations and case examples led by public health professionals, this workshop will introduce the concepts and methods for critical incident analysis as part of ongoing system improvement efforts in public health emergency preparedness.
