Program News: UCLA

By AUPHA Exchange posted 07-08-2013 11:04

There has been a lot happening here at UCLA’s Program in Health Policy and Management.  Diana Hilberman, longtime Program Director (20 years), has stepped down from her administrative role and will be assuming responsibilities primarily for teaching and developing programs.  A new Program Director will join our faculty right after Labor Day.

This coming year, Diana will continue to contribute to AUPHA as a member of the Filerman Teaching Award Committee and the Bugbee Falk Book Award committee.

This year, two of our students received the $10K Winston Scholarships.  Michelle Keller and Allison Mangiaracino, two students on our policy track with tremendous background and commitment to health policy.  Congratulations to them both.

We are delighted to welcome Emmeline Chuang, Ph.D., to our faculty for this coming academic year in the area of organizational behavior and theory.  Emmeline was most recently at San Diego State, where she worked closely with their masters’ students for both teaching and practice.  Dr. Chuang earned her AB degree in Psychology and Biology at Harvard University and a Ph.D. in Health Policy and Management from the University of Carolina at Chapel Hill.  She completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of South Florida in the Departments of Mental Health Law & Policy and Child & Family Studies, prior to returning home to Southern California.

Diana Hilberman received the Ira Alpert Service Award from the UCLA Health Policy and Management Alumni Association for her 24 years of commitment to the education of leaders in health management and policy.

Toni Yancey, MD, MPH, best known for her work with Instant Recess and her advocacy on behalf of exercise and obesity reduction has passed away. Tony had been awarded the CDC’s Pioneering Innovation Award for her work with Instant Recess, which is being rolled out on a national basis by Kaiser Permanente.  She was also a member of First Lady Michelle Obama’s President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition.  Toni’s passing was sadly untimely and we will miss her and her contributions to America’s serious obesity epidemic.

Congratulations to Erynne Jones (graduating student 2013) and Partow Zomorrodian (graduating student 2014), who have each published a  student contribution article in the Harvard Health Policy Review.  (Out of just 5 students–UCLA is well represented!).  Erynne writes about the branding and communications outreach of Covered California, our health benefits exchange. Partow writes about the effects of the ACA on safety-net providers.  Congratulations to both!
