HCA, in partnership with the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA), is pleased to announce the recipients of the HCA Corris Boyd Scholarship for 2013. Two students have been selected to receive $40,000 scholarships towards a master’s degree in healthcare management from the AUPHA full member program of their choice.

The HCA Corris Boyd Scholars Program was established in 2006 in honor of Mr. Corris Boyd, a senior healthcare executive with HealthTrust Purchasing Group and HCA. Boyd dedicated himself to diversity and excellence in leadership – especially among people of color. In his honor, the program annually provides scholarships to two deserving minority students. This year’s recipients are Carolina de la Puente and Crystal Sanford.

Carolina de La Puente will enter the George Washington University, School of Public Health and Health Services, where she will begin working towards a Master’s in Health Services Administration. “I am deeply honored to be a recipient of the Corris Boyd Scholarship, not only because it allows me to pursue a future in a field that is so central to the well-being of our communities, but because it encourages future health care leaders to follow in the footsteps of Mr. Corris Boyd, who like myself, found it an honor and a privilege to serve in the healthcare community,” says Carolina. “I am humbled to have been selected as a Corris Boyd Scholarship recipient, and I look forward to making a lasting impact on the field of hospital administration following my graduation from George Washington University."

Crystal Sanford will begin her graduate work at the University of Southern California in the fall. Here, she plans to pursue a Master’s of Health Administration, focusing on management, operations, leadership, and health finance. Crystal noted how extremely thankful she is to have been selected as one of the recipients for the Corris Boyd Scholarship. “Words cannot begin to describe how this scholarship and executive development will impact my pursuit of an advanced degree and future aspirations as a healthcare executive. Mr. Boyd's legacy as a mentor, community advocate, and leader continues to live on through this scholarship. I can only aspire to make an impact in the lives of others as he has.”

“Each year we are overwhelmed with the number of truly impressive applicants to the Corris Boyd Scholars program,” says Lydia Middleton, President & CEO of AUPHA. Carolina and Crystal possess the excellence and commitment that was exemplified by Corris Boyd, and we are truly honored to recognize them for their achievements as they continue to pursue their dreams.
