UW MHA Alumnus Appointed to the University of Washington Board Of Regents
Rogelio Riojas (MHA ’77) was recently appointed to the University of Washington Board of Regents by Washington Governor Jay Inslee. Riojas will serve a six year term on the board, alongside other major business and community leaders in the Pacific Northwest.

Riojas is the Chief Executive Officer of Sea Mar Community Health Centers, which employs 1,600 people and operates 60 facilities across 13 counties. Sea Mar Community Health Centers see about 200,000 people a year, 40 percent of whom are Hispanic/Latino. Sea Mar is one of Washington State’s largest providers of community-based health care.

UW Announces New Health Systems Research PhD Track
The UW MHA Program is proud to announce the launch of its new Health Systems Research PhD Track, through the Department of Health Services highly regarded PhD Program.  Ann Nguyen, MPH, is the first recipient of the UW Health Systems Research Assistantship for PhD students interested in health care management research.  Ms. Nguyen’s work will focus on helping to create a new health management research center at the UW.  She enters the PhD Program after earning an MPH in Epidemiology at University of California, Irvine and working at Palomar Health in Escondido, CA.

UW MHA Establishes New Research Organization – CHOSER
UW’s Department of Health Services and Department of Industrial & Systems Engineering (ISE) have formed a new Center of Health Organization and Systems Engineering Research (CHOSER). Its mission is to conduct cutting-edge, transformational research on the organization, management, payment, and systems-engineering challenges confronting health care. CHOSER will create exceptional research, and educational and impact opportunities that will have a direct positive influence on access, costs, resource utilization, and quality, as well as the patient experience within the partner health care organizations. CHOSER is an ideal partner for health care organizations seeking real-time evidence to solve immediate problems within a complex environment. UW MHA Program’s Director Dr. Christopher Johnson and UW ISE faculty member Dr. Christina Mastrangelo will co-direct CHOSER.

Executive MHA Student Awarded Albert W. Dent Scholarship
Congratulations to second-year Executive MHA Student, Maya Kimura, who was awarded the Albert W. Dent scholarship through the American College of Healthcare Executives.  Kimura was one of five recipients of this prestigious award.

Several other UW MHA students were awarded scholarships from industry organizations; including three students awarded HIMSS Washington Chapter Scholarships for 2012-2013:

Spenser Troiano, MHA Student, Class of 2014; Carl Field, Executive MHA Student, Class of 2013; and Nate Robinson, MHA Student, Class of 2013.
