AUPHA’s 2013 Annual Meeting, held this June in Monterey, California, was an exciting mix of education, networking, and the breathtaking beauty that is found in Monterey and its surrounds.
The 2013 Global Symposium, held immediately prior to the Meeting, provided those registrants with an opportunity to participate in a workshop centered on evidence-based strategic management models and application by health services organizations in a variety of countries undergoing health system reform. Case studies presented by international speaker panels showed how management models and relevant competencies successfully worked in various countries.
General sessions at the Monterey meeting included the Studer Group Forum, featuring Rhonda Scott, PhD, RN, generously sponsored by Studer Group, and the 2013 Pattullo Lecture, delivered by Carrie Owen Plietz, MHA, which also served as this year’s opening general session. Sincere thanks to Sutter Health for sponsoring in part the Pattullo Lecture.
Owen Plietz, the CEO of Sutter Medical Center Sacramento, shared stories about her meteoric ascent to become one of the youngest Chief Executive Officers in Sutter’s healthcare system. Rhonda Scott, Chief Nursing Officer and Executive Vice President, Grady Health System in Atlanta, Georgia, was a charismatic storyteller who regaled attendees with her stories of transformation, reformation, and elevation within the Grady system.
Meeting attendees were thrilled to honor this year’s very deserving award recipients. Stephen S. Mick, PhD, FACHE, Virginia Commonwealth University, was awarded the Gary L. Filerman Prize for Educational Leadership. Diana Bowman, LLB, PhD, University of Michigan received the John D. Thompson Award for Young Investigators. A highlight of the awards program was the presentation of the William B. Graham Prize for Health Services Research to Dorothy P. Rice, ScD, University of California. Renowned for her prolific body of research, Dr. Rice has authored more than 200 published monographs, books, articles, and book chapters on the economics of medical care, aging, chronic illness, disability, health statistics, and domestic violence. She has also written about various cost-of illness studies, including costs associated with the health effects of smoking, alcohol and drug abuse, mental illness, Alzheimer’s disease, and AIDS.
“Every member of the Graham Prize Selection Committee was very aware of the significant international and national contributions that Dr. Rice sustained throughout her career,” said Kyle Grazier, DrPH, University of Michigan professor and Graham Prize Selection Committee chair. “As a leader in the Social Security Administration and then at the National Center for Health Statistics, and since, she elevated the importance and use of high quality medical and financial data to inform decisions in policy making and management. She developed the cost-of-illness methodology that has been used to understand numerous illnesses and their impact on society. She is a wise and dedicated mentor to many. We all are grateful that the Graham Prize exists to honor someone of the stature of Dorothy Rice.”

First place went to Career Progression of Graduates of a Bachelor’s Degree Program in Health Services Administration - April Temple, PhD, and Jon Thompson, PhD, James Madison University. The second prize went to Healthcare Management Education: An Examination of Trends in Competency-Based Accreditation - Kevin Broome, PhD, and Suzanne Wood, PhD, Saint Louis University; Carla Sampson, MBA; and the third prize was awarded for Opening More Than Just a Bag - Michele McGowan, ABD, Kings College.
