Plan Now to Recognize a Faculty Colleague with an AUPHA Award, Prize, or Scholarship in 2025

Dear AUPHA Colleagues:

The importance of recognizing our colleagues for their contributions to the field of healthcare management and health policy education cannot be understated. Excellence for achievements in teaching, scholarship, and leadership positively and exponentially impact our academic programs, students, graduates and alumni, AUPHA, the field of healthcare management and leadership practice, and the health of our communities and nations.

One of the primary tenets of AUPHA’s most recent Strategic Plan (2020-2024) has been to increase recognition of faculty achievements in our field. To this end, we have added four new teaching awards, AUPHA’s first new prize in over 25 years, and a new early careerist faculty award to support healthcare management education scholarship.

Consistent with AUPHA’s goal of being the “big tent” for all of healthcare management and health policy education, ALL of the newest awards and prizes (created in 2020 or later) are available to faculty from both AUPHA full and associate member programs!

What are the opportunities you have to nominate a colleague or encourage them to step forward and be involved in their own nomination?

The following is a comprehensive list of all AUPHA faculty awards, prizes, and scholarships, both new since 2020 and our legacy distinctions, one of which was inaugurated in the mid-1980s. Each distinction below is a link to the AUPHA website so that you can learn more about these awards and prizes and see exactly how to nominate a colleague, or nominate yourself! They are listed in the order they were created.

  • Cultural Perspectives and Inclusive Excellence (2021)
  • Health Policy (2021)
  • Healthcare Management and Leadership (2021)
  • Ambulatory Care and Practice Management (2023)

AUPHA’s final faculty award is one that’s not based on nominations. Instead, it’s based on objective data systematically collected by AUPHA. Comprehensive data for faculty service to AUPHA; presentations at AUPHA meetings, workshops, and webinars; publications in JHAE; and postings on the AUPHA Network. Each year, one faculty member - from an AUPHA program or an AUPHA individual member - is recognized with the AUPHA Faculty Service Award (2018).

Why does it seem like faculty from some AUPHA member programs are recognized more often than faculty from other programs? It’s actually quite simple! No “rocket science” here! Those programs, departments, schools have designated a faculty or staff member to be responsible for thinking about how to recognize their faculty nationally through an AUPHA award, prize, or scholarship, or distinctions from other organizations (AOM, AcademyHealth, APHA, ASPPH, AACSB, and so on ….). AUPHA is Switzerland! They have someone who champions these efforts and coordinates the nomination and required materials. AUPHA leadership and staff do not nominate AUPHA members for any awards, prizes, or scholarships.

It’s up to you to make nominations and self-nominations! So, meet with others in your program, department, or school, and make a plan now to nominate your colleagues to recognize them for their outstanding achievements in healthcare management and health policy education, scholarship, and leadership for 2025!

Very best,

Dan
