Happy New Year! Welcome to 2017 and we hope your faculty role has started in a meaningful way.  The Board wanted to share an update on our collaboration discussions.

House calls

We have embarked on “house calls” with key collaborators and will continue to do so this year. Jerry and I, on behalf of the Association, met with Deborah Bowen, President/CEO of the American College of Healthcare Executives and three of her senior staff, Cynthia Hahn, Senior Vice-President, Desmond Ryan, Regional Services, and Michael Cunningham, Health Administration Press.  We discussed faculty and student participation at Congress on Leadership and optimizing exhibit space, the future of book publishing, expansion of student employment opportunities through a CAS-like system, and global health initiatives.  While no decisions were made, it was clear we have a mutual interest in working together to advance educational, networking, and employment opportunities for our mutual constituencies.

ACHE requested that we provide ongoing feedback on methods to strengthen our collaboration. So, we will be recruiting faculty to participate on a joint HAP-AUPHA futures conversation on the role of textbooks, electronic media, and information sources.  In addition, AUPHA will share information on local ACHE chapter excellence and what works well for faculty and students at the local level, along with AUPHA participation at the Pan American Health Organization in February 2017, where ACHE plans to participate to advance global health.

Jerry and I met with Andy Garman, Psy.D., M.S., in his role as CEO of the National Center for Healthcare Leadership, along with Joyce Anne Wainio, Vice-President, Lindsey Tucker, and Cassia Carter.  While Andy and the NCHL staff are members of AUPHA and continue to work with faculty and students, we wanted to discuss the status of the organization’s National Council on Administrative Fellowship and the update to its competency model and the next generation of the model.

Andy reported that 900 applicants had complete or verified fellowship applications through the National Administrative Fellowship Centralized Application Service (NAFCAS). The NAFCAS data reveal that the average number of fellowships applied to for applicants in NAFCAS was 5.6 and 3.23 through the traditional method (outside the NAFCAS system).  Through the NCHL survey following the first year of the system, students reported a high satisfaction rate with this electronic system.

The NCHL competency model with its transformation, execution, and people domains is moving to version 3.0. With the changing healthcare landscape, NCHL will look to the next iteration of its model and is inviting support from the academic community.  While AUPHA member programs subscribe to a number of competency models, it was important that we understand what leadership competencies we should be advancing in the classroom.  AUPHA will continue this important dialogue on competencies.

We have a future meeting planned with Rick Pollack, President/CEO of the American Hospital Association. It was apparent in the plenary and panel discussions during our 2016 Annual Meeting in Kansas City that healthcare policy and workforce issues are paramount to our members and collaborating with AHA will be key as we transition to a new Administration.

A New Student Scholarship at AUPHA

David and Linda Bachrach have created an endowed scholarship at AUPHA for second-year, full-time graduate students to be awarded annually in the amount of $5,000.   David Bachrach has more than 40 years of experience, including service as a senior executive in several physician-led academic health care organizations, including the University of Michigan Medical School and the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.  He has held concurrent faculty appointments, most recently as Professor of Health Services Management at M. D. Anderson. He holds a BA in Psychology from Ithaca College and an MBA in Health Services Management and Hospital Administration from the University of Missouri/Columbia and is a Fellow in both the American College of Medical Practice Executives and the American College of Healthcare Executives.

Linda Bachrach has had a career in higher education fund raising and served for five years as a consultant advising people of wealth on philanthropy and assisting small non-profit organizations with their fundraising endeavors. Linda now serves as the principal of My PrimeTime Coach, LLC. David and Linda have been married since 1969 and have two children; both school teachers in the New York City area.

AUPHA thanks them for their generous investment in students and we look forward to working with them. More information will be forthcoming on the scholarship and the application process.
