Ohio State MHA program completes $1M endowed scholarship honoring professor emeritus
The Ohio State University College of Public Health’s Division of Health Services Management and Policy (HSMP), donors, and friends came together at a reception in November to celebrate the completion of a $1 million endowed student scholarship to honor emeritus professor and health care leader William O. Cleverley.
In less than three years, more than 250 donors came together to raise the money to support this important student scholarship for the Master of Health Administration (MHA) program. This scholarship now represents the largest endowment at the College of Public Health.
“The alumni and friends who have donated to this endowment should be proud of the scholarship they’ve created,” said Tom Wickizer, professor and chair of the Division of Health Services Management and Policy. “They’ve created a lasting legacy and fitting honorarium for a beloved professor; and the support the scholarship provides will be helping future leaders in the health care profession.”
The Cleverley scholarship is named for Professor Emeritus William Cleverley, who taught health administration finance at Ohio State from 1973 until his retirement in 2001. Cleverley now serves as the President of Cleverley + Associates, a health care data and consulting services firm in Columbus, Ohio. He is also the author of Essentials of Health Care Finance, the leading textbook on health care finance. Cleverley continues to collaborate with the HSMP division and serves as a guest lecturer in health administration courses.
Present at the event was Kevin DePaola, the first William O. Cleverley Scholar. DePaola received his undergraduate degree in 2011 from The Ohio State University in international studies with a development track. DePaola is the son of Michael DePaola, ’87 graduate of the Ohio State health administration program and former student of Cleverley.
