Fellowship and employment update: One hundred percent of Minnesota graduates from the Full time Class of 2013 are placed in administrative fellowships and jobs throughout the U.S. A higher-than-usual percentage of graduates pursued jobs this year. Thirty-seven percent of placed graduates are employed in jobs while sixty-three percent hold fellowship positions.
A team of Minnesota MHA and MBA students placed third in the Humana Healthcare Case Competition in Louisville, Ky., Nov. 1. Full time students John Doyle (MHA/MBA), Dustin Nides (MHA/MBA), Bridget Perkins (MHA) and Alyssa Callister (MBA) proposed a comprehensive solution to engage Humana members in the 25-40 age segment that included a fitness marketing program and partnership with JawBone, a company that produces fitness bracelets that track health metrics. The team also recommended a health insurance product that would provide enrollees with annual deductible reductions by achieving individual goals with the JawBone fitness bracelet. Humana has invited the University of Minnesota team to return to Louisville for a presentation of recommendations to company leadership.
Isaac Corzine, Full time MHA student, was among a team of students who placed third in the Fifth Annual Medtronic Interdisciplinary Healthcare Case Competition, Oct. 25. Corzine and his teammates presented a recommendation to integrate control of an implantable medical device for overactive bladder into a smartphone application that could also serve as a data collection tool for primary care physicians involved in care of the patient. They also recommended an expansion strategy into Europe, South Korea and Brazil. Other team members are Emal Alwis, Electrical Engineering MS student, An Hoang, MBA and PharmD student, Erich Stoermer, MBA student and Kaizen Yang, MBA student.
Professor Jon Christianson has been appointed a second three-year term on the Institute of Medicine’s Board on Health Care Services, which provides oversight for all of the IOM’s projects related to healthcare services.
This fall, 67 Executive MHA students returned to campus for classes, presentations and community-building activities. Over the course of four days, Cohort 3 students completed a one-credit course in Health Policy; Cohort 4 students completed a one-credit course in organizational integration in healthcare. They also attended guest lectures by Linda Williams, Chief Medical Information Officer, Olmstead Medical office and Margaret Perryman, President & CEO, Gillette Hospital. Additional activities included discussions of capstone projects, work on cases developed by a student in each cohort, and continuing development of the cohorts. On-campus gatherings strengthen relationships among cohort members, foster the interchange of ideas, build each cohort as a unique community, and serve to maintain relationships between program faculty and staff.
