Interdisciplinary Education Event Enhances Learning on Communication and Collaboration Across Health Care Disciplines
Students from Georgetown’s MHSA program and seniors in the undergraduate Health Care and Management Policy program joined medical students and nursing students in a day-long interdisciplinary educational event (IDEE) in January to enhance learning on communication and collaboration across the disciplines of medicine, nursing, and health administration. The event took place on Georgetown University’s main campus and was a collaborative effort between Georgetown University Medical School and the School of Nursing & Health Studies’ Department of Health Systems Administration and Department of Nursing.
Objectives included improving knowledge and attitudes about roles of various health professionals, providing tools for effective teamwork, and learning about approaches to improve health care quality and patient safety. Students were placed in interdisciplinary small groups throughout the day, where they participated in a series of exercises and case studies facilitated by faculty and hospital staff representing a wide range of health care professions. The event was funded by the Curricular Innovation, Research, and Creativity in the Learning Environment (CIRCLE) Grant provided by Georgetown University Medical Center.
