Christine Candio, MPA, RN, FACHE

 ACHE Chairman Delivers Keynote Address in McAuley Lecture Series
Christine Candio, MPA, RN, FACHE, delivered the keynote address in the School of Nursing & Health Studies’ McAuley Lecture Series to nearly 200 people on September 22. Candio is CEO of Inova Alexandria Hospital, a senior vice president for the Inova Health System, and chairman of the American College of Healthcare Executives (2014-2015). She has also served as a preceptor for MHSA students in the Department of Health Systems Administration. The McAuley Lecture Series is funded by Georgetown parents Brian and Jane McAuley and focused on topics of health and health care. In the lecture, titled "The Health Care Landscape: Change Is Upon Us - Are You Ready?" Candio highlighted some current areas of focus, ranging from reduced reimbursements to community engagement. The full story and lecture video are available at

Health Systems Administration Professor Keynotes European CDC Event
Michael Stoto, PhD, professor of health systems administration and population health at the School of Nursing & Health Studies, delivered an invited keynote address on October 16 at the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control’s annual meeting of National Focal Points for Preparedness and Response in Stockholm.

Stoto’s talk focused on the difference between capacity and capability in terms of handling an emerging public health crisis. Stoto and his research colleagues at Georgetown and Harvard School of Public Health, through funding from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, have focused their research the past six years on how to measure capabilities, particularly as they relate to pandemic influenza outbreaks.

Graduate Program Director Presents for ACHE Board of Governors Exam Review Program
Bernard Horak, PhD, FACHE, CPHQ, professor of health systems administration and graduate program director, presented on quality and performance improvement at the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) Board of Governors Exam Review Program in Phoenix, AZ, on October 20.  Topics covered included patient safety, risk management and utilization review.
