The Filerman Prize Selection Committee is pleased to announce the selection of the University of Iowa’s Barry Greene, MA, PhD, Professor Emeritus of the Department of Health Management and Policy, as the 2011 recipient of the Filerman Prize for Educational Leadership. He will be presented with the Prize during an award luncheon at the Association of University Programs in Health Administration’s (AUPHA) annual meeting on Saturday, June 25th, in Charleston, SC.
The Filerman Prize was established to honor Gary L. Filerman, PhD, the first president of AUPHA, for his many years of service to the Association and healthcare management education. The Prize recognizes individuals from AUPHA member programs who have made outstanding contributions to the field of healthcare management education, who have exhibited leadership in the field, and who have enriched their institutions, their students, and healthcare management education through their work.
Dr. Greene was nominated by Peggy Leatt, PhD, Professor and Chair of the Department of Health Policy and Management at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and by Gordon Brown, PhD, Professor at the University of Missouri-Columbia. In her nomination, Dr. Leatt says, “[Dr. Greene] is passionate and persistent in his drive to maintain standards and continuously increase the expectations of quality in every aspect of our field. His contribution, beyond cause, has been through his expert teaching, research, and service to the profession. Dr. Greene’s rather demure and yet engaging style has meant that to date many of his contributions have gone unrecognized by our profession.”
Barry Greene earned his PhD in Sociology – Health Organization Research at Saint Louis University, later completing Post-Doctoral work in Managerial Epidemiology at Yale University Medical School. Having recently retired, Dr. Greene was formerly Professor and Head of the Department of Health Management and Policy at the University of Iowa, where he has held various faculty positions since 1999, and he is now Professor Emeritus. Prior to his tenure at the University of Iowa, Dr. Greene held positions at Trinity University and the University of Florida. His contributions were instrumental to the success of all three of these programs. As Dr. Brown notes in his nomination, “As chair at Trinity, he was instrumental in receiving a W.K. Kellogg grant, initiating the first accredited executive program delivering educational content using telecommunication technology… During his tenure [at the University of Florida], he created the health management department, reorganized the curriculum, and the program gained accreditation. At Iowa, he continued to develop strong disciplinary and systems-based curricula, built around a community health and chronic disease model. He consistently made valuable contributions to the field of health administration education, demonstrating his ability as an educational leader and as an effective departmental executive.”
Throughout his career, Dr. Greene has been an advocate for integrating mental health services into health administration curricula. He chaired the AUPHA National Task Force on Mental Health Administration Education between 1976 and 1982, and has contributed literature on the importance of accreditation as a public trust. He has been an advocate and contributor to the Journal of Health Administration Education and served as an AUPHA Board Member from 1983-87, taking on the role of Board Chair from 1985-86. In addition to his service to AUPHA, he supported the work of ACEHSA (now CAHME), becoming the first ACHESA Fellow and later serving as ACEHSA Commission and chair.
“It is a distinct honor to receive this award and it is important that each year at this time we reflect on all that Dr. Filerman has brought to the educational field of heath services management and policy,” says Greene. “He has been the perfect advocate at exactly the right point in time for the legitimation and sustainability of our professional career field.”
The Filerman Prize is administered by AUPHA with the generous support of the University of Minnesota’s Healthcare Alumni Associations/Foundation and the many friends of Dr. Filerman.
