The University of Washington MHA Program is pleased to announce that in January, Principal Lecturer, Aaron Katz, CPH, was awarded the Health Reform Leadership Award at the 2011 Washington “State of Reform” Health Policy Conference. Katz was the driving force behind the University of Washington Legislative Policy Conference, which ran for 20 years and was the inspiration for the “State of Reform” Health Policy Conference. Katz received this award in recognition of his leadership in creating a forum to discuss health policy.

In April, Katz presented “Fear and Loathing on the Rutted Road to Health Care Reform” at the American Institutions and Public Policy Distinguished Speaker Series, which was hosted by the University of Texas Department of Government.

Affiliate Instructor Scott Coplan, MPA, and Lecturer, David Masuda, MD, co-authored the book, Project Management for Healthcare Information Technology, which McGraw-Hill published in February. In June, they delivered a presentation on this topic at the Project Management Institute’s (PMI) Healthcare Community of Practice, and did a poster presentation at the Department of Health Services 2011 Annual Research Meeting. Also in June, Coplan and Masuda delivered the presentation, “Transformation Management” at the Healthcare Information System Society’s (HIMSS) Change Management Task Force meeting. In October, they are scheduled to present “Project Management for Healthcare Information Technology” at the PMI Global Conference North America Conference.

Coplan was appointed to the HIMSS Change Management Task Force in June. Shortly thereafter Coplan and Masuda’s book was added to the HIMSS Change Management Toolkit. In July, HIMSS nominated Coplan as a Fellow.

In April, Assistant Professor of Law, Sallie Sanford, JD, was Visiting Professor at Haramaya University in rural Harar, Ethiopia. She taught a seminar in current health law issues to law students, and health care ethics to nursing students. She also co-presented, "Writing and Publishing Scholarly Articles: Pragmatic Tips," to Haramaya University School of Law faculty with Christopher Sanford, MD, MPH.

In June, Sanford presented "State-based ACO and Medical Home Pilots: Early Lessons from the Other Washington" for the American Society of Law, Medicine and Ethics 34th Annual Health Law Professors Conference in Chicago. In July, she published “The Impact of a ‘Middle-Management’ Health Care Ruling” as an op-ed in JURIST.

We are also pleased to report that alumna Kimberly Nicholson, MHA, 2004, has been named one of the Puget Sound Business Journal’s 2011 40 under 40 honorees. For this honor, the Business Journal chooses men and women under the age of 40 who are dynamic leaders in their business, industry, and community. Nicholson is Administrative Director of the Cherry Hill Service Line for Swedish Health Services.
