Dr. Julie Agris brings
wide-ranging experience to MHA program
Hofstra University,
Hempstead, N.Y. -- Dr. Julie Agris,
a health care attorney with a doctoral degree in health policy who has worked
in government, academia and private industry, has been named Director of the
Master of Health Administration program and will become a full-time faculty
member in the Department of Health Professions and Kinesiology.
Dr. Agris, who has been
corporate compliance director and privacy officer at North Shore-LIJ Health
System, an adjunct professor at Hofstra since July 2008 and a faculty member of
the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine, took on her new post Aug. 1.
She holds a law degree from American University, a Master of Laws in Health Law
from the University of Houston and a doctorate in Health Policy from Brandeis
University.
“I am truly honored to
have the opportunity to offer my background as an asset to the students of
Hofstra’s MHA program,” Dr. Agris said. “I look forward to continuing to
support our students’ enthusiastic efforts to make meaningful contributions to
the improvement of patient care during such a significant time in the
development of our health care system.”
With a wide-ranging
professional background that mixes corporate, public policy and provider
experience, Dr. Agris has a grasp of the challenges facing health care
providers and policymakers. She has served as Legislative Counsel to the
Vermont General Assembly, as General Counsel for the U.S. Department of Health
and Human Services and the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System. She
also was a Vice President and General Counsel of Vantage Holding Company, LLC,
a large consortium of hospitals based in Pennsylvania.
“With her breadth of
experience and understanding of health policy from a variety of perspectives,”
said SOEHHS Dean Nancy Halliday, “Dr. Agris is the ideal person to run our Master
of Health Administration program and train the next generation of health
professionals.”
Dr. Corinne Kyriacou, associate professor of community health,
assistant chair of the Department of Health Professions and Kinesiology and
interim director of the MHA program agreed.
“Dr. Agris brings both
academic rigor and practical experience to the MHA program – her expertise and
corporate insight into health law issues and the impact of new policy reforms
will have on health facilities will serve our students extremely well, Dr.
Kyriacou said.
Hofstra University’s MHA
program is a 45-48 credit course of study designed for aspiring and committed
professionals interested in leadership positions in health services
administration in a variety of settings, such as as hospitals, managed care
organizations, medical group practices, ambulatory, long-term care, and home
health care facilities, insurance and pharmaceutical companies, consulting
firms, government, for profit, and nonprofit sector organizations. The program
is a vibrant, comprehensive, well-connected program with more than 125
students, 650 alumni and faculty with expertise in management theories,
organizational behavior and policy analysis who hold top executive positions in
area health care organizations.
