In recognition of her significant contributions to research literature in the field of health services, Holly Jarman, PhD has been selected as the 2014 recipient of the John D. Thompson Prize for Young Investigators. The Prize was established to honor John D. Thompson, a professor of health administration, who set standards in teaching, commitment to learning, collegial relationships, and health services research which are without peer. It is awarded to faculty from AUPHA members programs whose work, which may be in any of the several fields of disciplines, contributes to knowledge in health services. Dr. Jarman will be presented with the Prize at the AUPHA annual meeting this June in San Antonio, TX.

Dr. Jarman was nominated by Kyle Grazier, PhD, Chair of the Department of Health Policy and Management at the University of Michigan.  “Dr. Jarman has been recognized in health policy and political science circles as a leading scholar, although very early in her career. In her fields, books are as important as journal articles to the academy and to practice. Her books and her peer-reviewed articles are published by leading publishers and by journals in international and national health policy and political science. Having competed with over 120 candidates for her current position, she is one of the most productive early careerists in health policy and political science the search committee reviewed.”

Dr. Jarman is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the University of Michigan, but will assume a tenure track assistant professor position within the Department in May 2014.  Prior to her appointment at the University of Michigan, Jarman was an assistant professor in the Departments of Political Science & Public Administration at the State University of New York at Albany.  She earned her BA in British Politics & Legislative Studies at the University of Hull, UK and a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education and a PhD in Political Science from the London School of Economics & Political Science, UK.

Despite being earlier in her career than most past recipients, Dr. Jarman has done extensive work in crossing political science with healthcare.  Her work, and ultimately her publications, centers on two general themes, the relationship between tobacco control regulation and the global trading system, including the regulation of cross-border health markets and product supply chains; and cross-border data exchange to promote innovative methods of public health and environmental regulation.  In addition to her books and many articles, Dr. Jarman is also in the third year of her National Science Foundation-funded research project focusing on sustainable supply chains in North America and the role of information disclosure and exchange in promoting consumer choice and environmental sustainability.  he is currently editing a book that presents the findings from her project, Private Data and Public Value: Governance, Green Consumption, and Sustainable Supply Chains. It is under contract with Springer press as part of their Public Administration and Information Technology series, and scheduled for delivery later this year.

Upon receiving the news that she was the 2014 recipient of the Thompson Prize, Dr. Jarman said, “I am so thrilled to receive this award.  It really is such an honor.”  She is grateful to Dr. Kyle Grazier, not only for nominating her for this Prize, but as her mentor, for supporting her since her arrival at Michigan, and to everyone in the department for being so welcoming.

Nominations for the 2015 Thompson Prize will be solicited in the fall and winter for submissions by Spring 2015. In order to be eligible for the Prize, the nominee must be a faculty member at a Full Member Program of AUPHA, have been awarded a PhD no more than six years prior to consideration and have not yet achieved tenure. The Prize is intended to serve as a benchmark for pre-tenure work.
