Chair's Blog

I write this blog at my desk in the beautiful state of North Carolina.  Autumn is upon us, and the trees I see from my office window boast blazing gold, bronze and orange colors, signifying this Thanksgiving season. And, this time of year is a good time to say, “Thank you.”

  • Thank you to the members who volunteer on AUPHA committees to foster excellence and innovation in health management and policy education, and scholarship;

  • Thank you to the Health Management program directors and Internship/Practicum/Residency program coordinators who ensure that graduates from our programs have worked alongside other management professionals to see, first-hand, the importance of the work and ways to improve their skills;

  • Thank you to the practitioners and instructors who develop future leaders by showing them how to possess the values and competencies necessary to drive improvement throughout the health system;

  • Thank you to the Faculty Forum Chairs and the members who share their talent and ideas;

  • Thank you to the AUPHA staff who work tirelessly and with positive attitude to help us meet and exceed our mission; and

  • Thank you all for your commitment to this Association with its rich history and bright future.

We work better when we work together, share ideas, and challenge/support one another as a team and, at AUPHA, I have been privileged to work with dedicated members who contribute—in a collegial manner and with a strong sense of purpose to our mission.

Also, I have seen generosity of spirit and money to ensure important AUPHA initiatives are met. Last month, AUPHA announced the formation of the new scholarship that honors the service of our retired President and CEO, Jerry Glandon. The  Glandon Family Scholarship for the Advancement of Healthcare Management Education is for future educational leaders and will provide them recognition and financial support at an early stage of their career.  The intent is to award the scholarship to a faculty member from an undergraduate program in one year and a graduate program the alternative year.

The first Glandon Family Scholarship will be awarded to a faculty member from a graduate program at the AUPHA Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City, 2020.

Applications will be accepted through January 6, 2020. Please consider applying or encouraging a worthy faculty member at an early stage of her/his career to do so. I know of no better way to support excellence than to tap a deserving colleague on the shoulder and say, “Have you a copy of this application ? I think you should apply!”

Who is eligible?

The Scholarship is for full time faculty in an AUPHA member program who have not yet received tenure. Association leadership will award the Scholarship to a faculty member with demonstrated academic performance to date and outstanding potential. The funds, awarded to the faculty member, must support advancing knowledge of content area and/or educational techniques for the individual faculty member. The application should make those positive outcomes clear.

What are the selection criteria?

  • Demonstrated successful academic performance as a classroom teacher, educational technology innovator or student mentor. Letter from program director/chair.
  • Commitment to healthcare management education as a career option. Personal statement.
  • Evidence of impact on students. The student should have observed the faculty member in action and be willing to provide evidence of impact. Letter of recommendation from student.

Who determines who will receive the award?

The awardee will be determined jointly by  the AUPHA President/CEO and the immediate past chair of the AUPHA Board.  The first year’s recipient will be determined by the former AUPHA President/CEO, Gerald L. Glandon, PhD.

This scholarship is made possible through generous donations. As we begin to collect scholarship applications and assist those who continue to carry out our mission, please consider joining me in making a charitable donation. Monetary contributions of any amount are appreciated. If you would like to contribute to the Glandon Family Scholarship, please mail a check to:
