Happy New Year!

Do you make a list of new year’s resolutions, or do you make the resolution never to make a resolution?

I am one who makes resolutions, and I write them down in a bound journal, refer to them regularly, noting if I am making progress, and enjoying placing a check beside a goal when it has been accomplished.

With your indulgence, here are some items from my ‘twenty for 2020 as they relate to AUPHA:’

  1. Reflect upon why I make the goals; Done
  2. Help to develop the AUPHA strategic plan; (ongoing)
  3. Support the next AUPHA President and CEO as she or he assumes the role;
  4. Attend and participate in the AUPHA Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City;
  5. Participate more actively in at least one AUPHA Faculty Forum; (ongoing) and
  6. Contribute to the Glandon Family Scholarship for the Advancement of Healthcare Management Education. Done

While #1 is a steady item on my new year’s resolution lists, the others I listed are similar to one another in that they are timely, specific, and important.

This is a significant year for AUPHA. We will select a new AUPHA President and CEO, complete our strategic plan, and continue to develop our programs and events. These actions are important because they increase our membership value, which is dependent upon membership involvement and participation. Simply put, we are better when we work together.

I have witnessed our working together well by the efforts of the AUPHA President and CEO Search Committee, chaired by Diane Howard. With passion and enthusiasm, the committee members have followed a rigorous timeline to ensure the process is fair and complete as they decide upon their recommendations to the Board.

Also, I have seen the excellent results of the Annual Meeting Planning Committee, chaired by Tracy Farnsworth, to develop the program, Improve your (2020) Vision—Elevate your Performance, June 3 – 5, 2020 in Salt Lake City. With enthusiasm and dedication, they have made this annual event inviting and inclusive, complete with both new items such as the special track for doctoral students as well as providing excellent speakers throughout.

Our board members are also engaged in the continued work on strategic planning, guided by Suzanne Wood, with Steven Bateman, Nancy Borkowski, Jeff Helton, and Daniel Lee serving as leaders on specific initiatives. Their work illustrates shared commitment and strong sense of purpose to our mission.

Will Rogers is quoted to have said, “If you want to be successful, It’s just this simple. Know what you are doing. Love what you are doing. And believe in what you are doing.”

Just what I have witnessed this past year.

What is on your list for ‘twenty for 2020 as they relate to AUPHA?’

If you are looking for one that would add great value to future healthcare leaders, please consider contributing to the Glandon Family Scholarship for the Advancement of Healthcare Management Education. This scholarship is for future educational leaders and will provide them recognition and financial support at an early stage of their career. The first Glandon Family Scholarship will be awarded to a faculty member from a graduate program at the AUPHA Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City, 2020. If you are so inclined, please click here to donate.

If you have any questions or comments, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I look forward to seeing you throughout the year.

Best,

Leigh
