The Charter is “a set of expectations as to how model health care organizations should be led and managed.” It establishes principles for delivering effective patient care; maintaining a healthy, effective workforce; and improving population health. It contains a strong vision for patient rights, and an emphasis on community health. It is achievable. Baldrige Award winning HCOs pursue similar values, have solved and documented appropriate work processes, and produced documented, audited top quartile performance. The Charter should be part of every healthcare management student's learning. HAS AUPHA FAILED? This paper, by a team at Boston Consulting was published recently in PLOS ONE: Quantifying Geographic Variation in Health Care Outcomes in the United States before and after Risk-Adjustment, Barry L. Like many of you, we find ourselves in need of a couple of good faculty members, one to take over the role as the program director of our very strong undergraduate program this Fall. We've posted an ad with AUPHA...actually paid for it, believe it or not, I'm just getting the word out. We have a strong, well-supported program nestled in the foothills of the beautiful Rocky Mountains...I just got done running and saw a couple of golfers on the course. Skiers are also on the slopes now...hard to beat that. Contact me if you want to know more. Ken

Many years ago when I was an Intravenous (IV) Therapist in training at a major teaching hospital, I sat down to a thirty minute dinner break with my fellow IV team members in the hospital cafeteria. One of our team mates was late. She rushed to the table with her tray, and raced to tell us why she was delayed. Not only did she provide the team with chapter and verse of the patient she last saw, but also told us the patient’s diagnosis, the tragedy surrounding the patient, the little boy she was leaving behind, and her youth.
