The 14th Annual UAB Health Administration Case Competition topic asked the teams to identify methodologies that the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) could use to measure access to care for its beneficiaries. On February 27-28, forty (40) schools, representing 26 states from across the country, presented their solutions to a national panel of judges.   AUPHA’s 2020 Annual Meeting, scheduled to be held in Salt Lake City, Utah, June 3-5, is less than three months away. AUPHA is carefully and closely monitoring the impact of the new coronavirus, COVID-19. As of this today, March 12 th , plans are to hold the Annual Meeting as scheduled. The early registration deadline has been extended to March 31, 2020, to accommodate those who are unable to meet the earlier deadline. We will extend the deadline further if necessary. The deadline to secure the early registration rate for AUPHA's 2020 Annual Meeting , scheduled to be held in Salt Lake City, Utah, June 3-5. has been extended from March 16th to March 31st, to accommodate current travel restrictions due to concerns  surrounding Covid-19.  We will re-evaluate the deadline after March 31st. AUPHA is continuously monitoring the situation and will be providing updates on the home page of the AUPHA web site and through eblasts to the membership

As you know, AUPHA made the decision to cancel the 2020 Graduate Program and Practitioner Workshop scheduled to be held March 23rd in Chicago.  The decision was made after notification that ACHE was cancelling Congress 2020 in response to concerns about Covid-19. Plans are to offer the Workshop in a virtual format.  Some portions of it will be held in conjunction  with ACHE; the two organizations are working collaboratively to determine when and how best to deliver the material in a manner that will best imitate the onsite experience.  This will also provide us with the opportunity to reopen registration, which will be complimentary, on a first-come, first-served ...

LeadingAge and George Washington University have made the decision to postpone the Student Case Competition. This is a prudent decision considering the uncertainty of the current COVID-19 situation.The Case Competition will be rescheduled during the 2020 – 2021 academic year and details will be communicated as soon as possible.

Since several universities are closing campuses in the next few weeks due to the spread of COVID-19, the application deadline for the Bachrach Family Scholarship and the Corris Boyd Scholarship have been moved to May 1, 2020. This will allow additional time for applicants to submit transcripts and letters of recommendation. Students who have already applied for the scholarships have been notified of the new deadline. It is with heavy hearts that we share the news regarding the recent passing of Jay Warden.  Warden was the son of Gail L. Warden, President Emeritus of the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit.  Before joining Ford, Warden served as president and chief executive officer of Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound in Seattle.  Prior to that he was executive vice president of the American Hospital Association and executive vice president and chief operating officer of Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago. AUPHA's 2021 Annual Meeting will be held in Tampa, Florida, June 8 -10, 2021, at the JW Marriott Tampa Water Street Hotel, a new property opening in October of 2020. While we have a nice complement of individuals who volunteered to serve on  the 2021 Annual Meeting Planning Committee (AMPC), we are looking for individuals from our Florida programs who may be interested in serving on the Committee. The Pfeiffer University UPD Chapter shared a thank you letter from their recent UPD Scholarship Recipient, Christine Baily. I started my journey towards healthcare administration with my undergraduate degree at Central Michigan University (CMU), where I graduated with a Bachelor's Degree, majoring in Biomedical Science and minoring in Chemistry. I grew up in Michigan and had aspirations of becoming a medical doctor, but decided to put these plans on hold in order to take the opportunity to join the Peace Corps. AUPHA is pleased to announce that applications are now open for the 2020 Upsilon Phi Delta Grant Program. Consistent with the goals of UPD, AUPHA seeks to elevate the standards, ideals, competencies and ethics of professionally educated students in healthcare management and policy and leadership. Often, programs within UPD have innovative initiatives that cannot be implemented because of the lack of funds. Consequently, AUPHA has pledged to fund two (2), $2,500 competitive UPD Grants each year for at least the next four (4) years. Suzanne Wood, an assistant professor of health services at the University of Washington School of Public Health, recently received a two-year, more than $750,000 grant from the United States Department of Defense to evaluate the delivery of health care for service members and Veterans with spinal cord injuries, and offer recommendations for improvement. Nominations for AUPHA’s Board of Directors is open until February 15, 2020. Beginning in 2020, travel, housing, and other minor incidental charges to attend AUPHA’s in person Board meetings will be covered by AUPHA. Board members will not be expected to shoulder those costs, if their programs are unable to cover them. At present, there are three in person Board meetings scheduled annually: One prior to the start of the Annual Meeting (June); one in the fall (October or November); and one prior to the start of ACHE’s Congress (March).
