Glossary Entry
Quality and Patient Safety
Needs a lot of help
This topic covers the quality and patient safety function. Many programs do not have a separate quality improvement course. This grid includes a separate column for resources (i.e., readings), which tend to be topic-specific.
For additional background, note that The body of knowledge for the quality issues relevant to healthcare management has been delineated in several documents listing “competencies”. Most of the lists have been compiled by the business practitioner-related professional societies. The Healthcare Leadership Alliance (HLA) published a compilation of these competency listings (see Journal of Healthcare Management 53:6 November/December 2008 ). A separate source for identifying the body of knowledge for quality, not included in the HLA document, are the professional societies for quality practitioners. The healthcare section of American Society for Quality (ASQ), for example, is currently working on identifying the body of knowledge from their perspective.
