Lean Six Sigma: As a Performance Improvement Methodology for HSA Students

When:  Feb 20, 2013 from 13:00 to 14:00 (ET)

Lean Six Sigma is a performance improvement approach that provides a methodology and tools for understanding and improving processes in order to exceed customer expectations.  It has gained increasing importance in today’s dynamic environment due to the need for rapid learning and adaptation to change.  The skills learned in this training include critical competencies for healthcare administrators due to the emphasis on evidenced-based management (EBM).

This presentation will provide an overview of the LSS methodology and tools in order to evaluate its appropriateness in your academic program, as well as:

  • Overview of the LSS methodology and tools
  • Differences among LSS courses:
    • Some focus on six sigma, some lean and some a blend of both.
    • Many focus on technological components vs. the leadership and interpersonal skills needed for project management.
    • Not all require projects – use case studies.
    • Not all require an exam.
    • Not all programs provide certification (ABET, ASQ, etc); not all certifications are supported by an accredited group.
  • Considerations for determining how you will provide training:
    • What skills/competencies do you want the student to have?
    • What is your intent:  academic versus practical?
    • How comprehensive do you want/need to be?
    • How much time do you have?
    • Do you have access to practical setting for projects?
    • Do you want to provide certification?
  • Question & Answers
