Professor Nicolas Ziebarth Wins Vernon Memorial Award
Nicolas Ziebarth’ s award for best paper of the year in the Journal of Policy Analysis and Management is the latest in a string of 10 best paper awards since 2010. Among them, last year he received the prize for the best health economics paper by the German Health Economics Association. Dr. Ziebarth was recently granted tenure and we look forward to his continued contributions to the Sloan Program.

New Findings on the Impact of Obesity on Healthcare Costs from AUPHA Thompson Award Winner and Sloan Faculty Member John Cawley
Professor Cawley, an authority on the impact of obesity and health, recently published an article with colleagues from AHRQ and Lehigh University that estimated, for the first time, the percentage of health care spending that is associated with obesity. In addition to being honored with AUPHA’s Thompson Award, Cawley has been recognized by a number of other organizations including receiving the Investigator Award in Health Policy Research from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the SUNY Chancellors Award for Excellence in Scholarship, the Shepard Science Award from the CDC, and a Fulbright grant.

McKinsey Exec Joins Sloan to Teach and Groom Students for Consulting Careers
Ying Yang, an engagement manager at McKinsey consulting, will be joining Sloan next year to teach a course on health care management consulting and to advise students who pursue careers in management consulting, pharmaceuticals/biotech, and health care innovation. In many years over 30% of students go into consulting, so her teaching/mentoring will be a valuable addition. Yang has an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in health management, and a Master of Economics and a Law Degree from Fudan University.

Attracting Diverse Sloan MHA Applicants: Sloan Program Selected for Inaugural CAHME Mentorship Circle Group
Cornell was honored to be selected as one of the inaugural members of the CAHME Mentorship Circle. It has been rewarding to attract a diverse student body to our Sloan Family, of which 35% are underrepresented minorities (i.e., self-identifying their race and/or ethnicity as African American/Black/Native American/Hispanic). We look forward to making available an admissions case study on one approach to developing a diverse student population that might be of interest to other MHA programs.

New Sloan Consulting Course Assesses Potential Hospitality and Health Innovations in Partnership with Institute for Healthy Futures (CIHF) and Hilton
Sean Nicholson, Sloan Director and Faculty Fellow at CIHF, spent a number of years as a management consultant at two firms before joining the faculty at Wharton and then coming to Cornell. He is tapping this background to work with a CIHF partner who will be the consulting client. The class teams will work with Hilton’s Senior Director of Strategic Innovation Delivery, to assess opportunities at the intersection of hospitality, health and design for the company.

Institute Inspired Sloan-Design Team Takes 2nd at Entrepreneurship Pitch Competition, Accepted into the Highly Competitive eLab Accelerator/Incubator
Neha Navre Sloan ’19 and Paulina Villacreces DEA ’19 connected at a CIHF innovation competition, then decided to team up pairing market analysis and management understanding with design and ergonomics expertise to develop a prototype for a new approach to a smart mattress to help deal with pressure ulcers. They were recently accepted into the prestigious eLab, continuing a tradition that has seen many recent Sloan students represented, including last year’s Student Business of the Year finalist.

Former Legislator Armed with Sloan MHA Narrowly Misses in Underdog Bid for Congress, Moves on to COO at Banner Health
Nate Shinagawa MHA ’09, decided to make a direct impact on health, coming to Sloan while serving as a regional legislator. A 40 Under 40 awardee while a student, after graduating he moved to Guthrie Health System, then took a leave of absence won a 3 way primary and nearly unseated an incumbent Congressman with no national party support. Nate then decided to return to Guthrie and moved up steadily to become VP of Operations before recently taking a new Chief Operating Officer position with Banner—where he can have an impact on both delivery and policy.

Economic Times "40 Under Forty" Recognizes Sloan '05 Graduate, Managing Director of Roche Diagnostics India
Shravan Subramanyam MD, MHA ‘05 has had a number of leadership positions in the medical device and pharmaceutical industry since leaving Cornell, and has also worked to help build an entrepreneurial reference laboratory. He has been a Sloan Alumni Association Board member, internship preceptor, and mentor to students seeking careers in life-sciences related fields.

Sloan Alumni Award to Sandy Williams '63: Partner-Witt Kieffer, Ex-AHA SVP, Health System CEO
Currently an Of Counsel Advisor, former partner at Witt/Kieffer, Sandy’s prior positions included SVP and Deputy to the President of the American Hospital Association, CEO of multi-hospital Episcopal Health Services, EVP of St. Luke’s-Roosevelt in New York City and COO at the University of Michigan Hospitals. After graduating from Williams, Sandy was a Peace Corps volunteer in Liberia prior to coming to Cornell. Sandy has had extensive involvement with Sloan as a Doug Brown Executive in Residence, has been Wagner Lecturer, and has served as Sloan Alumni Association President.
