Update from Lee Bewley, PhD, FACHE, Director, Health Management Programs; Associate Professor, University of Louisville School of Public Health & Information Sciences

In August, the University of Louisville School of Public Health & Information Sciences (SPHIS) welcomed 10 students into the MS in Health Administration (MSHA) cohort of 2021-2023. Although most students are from the Commonwealth of Kentucky, they bring with them a plethora of background experiences from across the country and world. Several of these MSHA Cardinals and members of the MSHA 2022 graduating cohort will be serving in Administrative Internships through the program's partnership with UofL Health, the University of Louisville health system. UofL Health provides part-time employment "earn and learn" opportunities for our students that also facilitate development of summer practicums. Similarly, Norton Healthcare recently selected UofL MSHA student, Kiara James, as a Norton Scholar, which provides part-time employment and opportunities for integrative learning.

Our program is pleased to announce that we welcomed two new faculty members over the summer. Dr. Andrew McCart, a graduate of the University of Louisville and Indiana University, joined as Associate Director after serving as Program Director of the University of Louisville's undergraduate program in Healthcare Leadership. Finally, Dr. Katie Yewell, a recent graduate of Vanderbilt University's doctoral program in Economics, joined our faculty and will be focusing her teaching and research in health economics. We also bid farewell in retirement to an endearing, respected colleague, Dr. Robert Esterhay. Dr. Esterhay was one of the founding faculty members of UofL SPHIS and the first chair of the Department of Health Management and Systems Sciences, retired after more than two decades of service as a faculty member and academic leader.

  • Dr. Liza Creel, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Health Management and Systems Sciences, contributed to an article published in BMC Psychiatry titled, “High-level psychotropic polypharmacy: a retrospective comparison of children in foster care to their peers on Medicaid.” The research team explored the use of antipsychotic medication and psychotropic polypharmacy for children from low-income families and those in foster care. • Kelsey White, doctoral student in the Dept. of Health Management and Systems Sciences, Dr. Ryan Combs, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Health Promotion and Behavioral Sciences (HPBS), and Hallie Decker, HPBS doctoral student, conducted interviews to understand perspectives on professional chaplaincy board certification. Study results, which was published in the Journal of Health Care Chaplaincy, demonstrated divergent views on many aspects of board certification, but revealed that participants predominately respected and valued the process. • Shannon Forde, MS in Health Administration recent graduate (Class of 2021), University of Louisville School of Public Health & Information Science, was offered and accepted an Administrative Fellowship at Baptist Health Louisville.
  • MS in Health Administration student Tiff Haub, MS, ATC, LAT, was awarded a $2,000 academic scholarship from the Kentucky Public Health Association (KPHA). Awardees of the Ellen M. Buchart Scholarship must be a member of KPHA, a junior, senior, or graduate student with a health or science major; preference is given to students in public health programs. Congratulations, Tiff!
