So You Want to Teach? The Anatomy of a Course
8:00AM-5:30PM with a lunch break from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM
Many practitioners and graduate students are excited by the prospect of translating their years of experience into a course that effectively teaches the next generation of health administrators. However, deciding where to start when designing a course from scratch can be a daunting task. Aimed at the introductory level, this full day, boot-camp type session offers doctoral students, practitioners, and new and aspiring faculty an opportunity to learn more about the best practices of teaching.
Learning through the case study method can be an engaging, interactive, and challenging way for students to learn how to solve realistic problems in healthcare. The case method serves as an excellent approach to integrating higher-level teaching, learning, and assessment methods in the classroom. Teaching with case studies also encourages collaborative problem-solving, creates a sense of belonging, and develops students’ interpersonal skills. This half-day course is for individuals at the intermediate or advanced level who want to learn how to teach healthcare management using the case method. Attendees will apply the case method in small groups during the session.
Inclusive Excellence and Belonging: Creating and Sustaining an Environment in Which All Learners Thrive
This half-day course, which is open to all levels of learners, is aimed to help educators take a critical eye to their courses to identify opportunities to ensure students feel a sense of belonging and inclusion. Faculty attendees will have an opportunity to richly engage in discussion about how common classroom structures may inadvertently exclude students. Starting with an examination of their own identity and teaching practices, we will lead faculty on a journey through their courses to identify opportunities for building a more welcoming community. Attendees will leave the session with practical, actionable steps that they can bake into the fabric of a new course or implement immediately in an existing course.
