Bio

James is the Executive Director, Anesthesia Associates of Boise, P.A., a Care Team model, independent, private practice anesthesia group, with 32 physicians and 130 Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists. He has over 37 years’ experience in health care administration including 19 years as a medical practice administrator (orthopedic surgery, cardiology and anesthesiology groups), 5 years as a practice management consultant and interim medical practice administrator, 3 years as a health system director, and 10 years as an active-duty U.S. Army Medical Service Corps officer.

James’ academic preparation includes a Ph.D. in Adult and Organizational Learning from the University of Idaho, a Master of Health Administration degree from Baylor University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration (Management) from the University of Central Florida. His academic appointments include Creighton University’s Heider College of Business (where he teaches Human Resource Management for the Executive Healthcare Master of Business Administration program and the Executive Fellowship program), the University of North Carolina Wilmington’s School of Health and Applied Human Sciences (where he teaches Healthcare Systems for the Master of Healthcare Administration Program) and Florida Gulf Coast University’s Marieb College of Health & Human Services (where he teaches Human Resource Management for the Master of Health Science degree). He has a past appointment to the Idaho State University’s School of Business (where he taught Physician Practice Management for the Master of Health Administration program).

Since 2016, James has been affiliated with the Commission on the Accreditation of Health Management Education (CAHME), serving on the CAHME Board of Directors, the Accreditation Council (member), the Standards Council (member and Chair), the Candidacy Committee as well as completing 12 accreditation site visits (including four as the team Chair). He is a CAHME Certified Fellow.

James is a Fellow and past national board member of the American College of Medical Practice Executives (ACMPE), a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), a member of the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) and a member of the American Society of Anesthesiology’s (ASA) Anesthesia Administrators and Executives (AAE) community. He is board-certified in medical practice management, healthcare administration and health information management systems. A member of the Idaho Medical Group Management Association (IMGMA) since 1995, he served as IMGMA’s President in 1998-1999, and was named its “Member of the Year” in 2004. In 2016, IMGMA honored James with its “Lifetime Achievement Award” at the association’s annual conference.

James has published numerous articles and lectured nationally since 1996 regarding healthcare administration, leadership, medical practice management and health information technology issues. In 2000 the Idaho Business Review identified James as one of Idaho’s “40 Under 40 Young Achievers”. While on active duty, James earned Airborne and Air Assault wings, earned the Expert Field Medic distinction, and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal on 3 occasions.
