Dr. Gwyndolan L. Swain

Dr. Gwyndolan L. Swain currently serves as Founding Director and Professor of Health Administration at Belmont Abbey College in North Carolina. Dr. Swain joined the University in December 2020 after 11 years at Pfeiffer University where her role as Director and Associate Professor began as an adjunct instructor, after completing a Doctor of Health Administration degree at the Medical University of South Carolina.  A Master of Business Administration/Master of Health Administration joint degree and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing also complete her educational portfolio.  During her tenure at Pfeiffer, she has taught numerous health administration courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.  In her administrative role, Dr. Swain led the department in acquiring CAHME national accreditation and incorporating new technologies into health administration education that produced increased enrollment.  As a testament to her passion for teaching, she was awarded the University’s inaugural Webb Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2019, a recognition that is determined by the student body. Dr. Swain was recently elected to the office of President Elect of the Greater Charlotte Gealthcare Executives Group. She is also a new Board Member of The High Road Inc. She is also the Faculty Advisor for the Belmont Abbey College Chapter of Upsilon Phi Delta National Honor Society.

In addition to her academic achievements, Dr. Swain has experience in corporate healthcare settings in the Charlotte area.  At Atrium Health, she was a Corporate Expert and Administrative Manager within Human Resources.  By developing and implementing a Return to Work program for 65,000 employees, an 11% decrease in Short Term Disability claims duration was realized, saving the organization $1.2 million.   As a Clinical Manager with Mecklenburg County Health Department for Maternal and Child Health Services and Immunizations, she managed a comprehensive community outreach program resulting in significant increases in both client referrals and a 25% increase in revenue for the agency.

Dr. Swain’s commitment to learning and exemplary programming combined with her practical field experience provide a foundation for her work in preparing future administrators for key roles in healthcare systems, a critical need in today’s world.
