Ignite Sessions I:

An Innovative Approach to Developing Health Facility Planning Competencies
R. Brooke Hollis, MBA/HHSA, Cornell University

Graduates often find themselves on facility planning committees or facing physicians with project ideas but with zero background. Learn how a weekend of interdisciplinary teaching helps students to be more effective in these situations.

* Interesting Speaker Tidbit:  In addition to my health management degree, I have a Master of Architecture and Urban Design and was previously the director of planning at the University of Cincinnati Hospital.

Breaking IT out of the MHA Stand Alone Silo
Cynthia LeRouge, PhD, University of Washington

Technology of some form (e.g., EHR, dashboards, ERP, HIE) supports the execution of many health administration functions. Yet, most MHA programs constrain the coverage of all that is technology to one health IT course. Isn't it time to break these constraints and integrate discussion of and exposure to these critical supporting tools into the context of other MHA courses?

* Interesting Speaker Tidbit:  This Cajun and Zydeco dancer started a crawfish festival in Florida that lasted over 15 years and drew crowds of up to 15,000 dancers over a March weekend.

Connecting College and Community at the Red Cross
Ethel Elkins, DHSc, University of Southern Indiana

The Red Cross is not just about giving blood. There is much work to be done that both clinical and non-clinical interns can do. Learn how three programs in the  school of nursing and health professions have been able to team up to help the Red Cross through internships in their community.

* Interesting Speaker Tidbit:  I returned to school at age 50, after a long clinical social work career, completing both my MHA and DHSc, in order to begin teaching.

Experiential Learning:  A Program-Industry Partnership Approach
Kevin LaFrance, PhD, University of the Incarnate Word

Do you want to improve your student's chances of landing their first healthcare position? Consider implementing the Concurrent Graduate Assistantship.

* Interesting Speaker Tidbit:  I was an Army Medical Service Corps Officer for 25 years.

Integrating Health Administration into Interprofessional Education:  Beyond the Clinic
Anna Foucek Tresidder, PhD, Eastern Washington University

Health Services Administration and Occupational Therapy students take the reins and engage in a collaborative service-learning project.  This is interprofessional education beyond the clinical case exercise.

* Interesting Speaker Tidbit:  I am the only age-group triathlete in my field that wishes the swim was longer and the run was shorter!

Lightning Labs:  Catching Innovation in a Bottle
Patrick Shay, PhD, Trinity University

What is a quick, fun exercise that engages students as they apply innovative thinking to today's varied challenges in health care?  Lightning Labs!

* Interesting Speaker Tidbit:  I have an identical twin brother, and our families live on the same street, which is awfully confusing for our neighbors.

Ignite Sessions II:

Peer Review to Enhance Student Learning in Large Classes
Trent Spaulding, PhD, Appalachian State University

How can we provide sufficient feedback for students as class sizes grow? The challenge multiplies in courses that require writing. Few technology solutions exist.

* Interesting Speaker Tidbit:  Trent is a technology geek who doesn't think technology is the answer.

Program Director Leadership:  Who Will Replace the Baby Boomers?
Joel Lee, DrPH, University of Georgia

This February, there were a surprising 17 open positions as health administration department chairs - - it is time to plan for succession in leadership!

* Interesting Speaker Tidbit:  I traveled across Australia for six months living in a Volkswagen Camper, while guest lecturing at five universities.

Randomization Error: Group Selection Process in Healthcare Administration Education
Bryan Breland, DrPH, University of Alabama at Birmingham

Explore the shortcomings of long-accepted approaches in assigning student groups for collaborative projects. Purposive assignment of students based on individual characteristics improves performance and satisfaction. This session presents the findings and experiences of building balanced groups in a TBL environment.

* Interesting Speaker Tidbit:  As a kid, I taught myself to play guitar, but was holding the guitar upside down. I now have a “unique style.”

Success of Innovative Curriculum in an Online MHA Program
Joan Murdock, PhD, University of Cincinnati

Come hear about the relevance and effectiveness of this university program's Emerging Issues course. In-depth case studies and live, synchronous lectures provide innovative, interactive and relevant content in this 100% online graduate health administration program.

* Interesting Speaker Tidbit:  I would rather be fishing.

United We Stand!  Together We Learn and Serve!
Jennifer Groebner, EdD, Governors State University

It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3!  Learn how to develop an interprofessional education learning opportunity focused on population health.

* Interesting Speaker Tidbit:  (1) I sang with the Beach Boys.  (2) On each cruise I go on, I sneak one of the life preserver's with the ship's name on it off the railing of the lido deck and take a selfie wearing it for my scrapbook.

Your Face Says it All
Toni Plato, MS, Pacific University

Discover how to bring the classroom experience to online learning. See how integrating live synchronous sessions to your online programs can better engage the learner and the instructor.

* Interesting Speaker Tidbit:  When I’m not building interactive online programs through Pacific University, I have also been known to moonlight as a lead singer for funky local bands in Portland, Oregon.
